Quilter’s Newsletter has published my Christmas Poinsettias quilt in their special issue titled Best Christmas Quilts 2012. I’m so proud to be a part of this magazine as it is chock full of quilt patterns and projects for the holidays. Each of the 28 projects include step-by-step instructions. The issue went on sale on August 21 and is available at newsstands around the country. It is not included in a QN subscription.
Christmas Poinsettias is a pieced and appliqued quilt constructed entirely with semi-solid hand-dyed fabrics. The subtle mottling of this fabric gives it a soft look. It finishes 82″x82″ and fits perfectly on top of my queen-size bed.
I designed this quilt on Electric Quilt using one of their blocks as a start. The 12″ block from their library was shown in fall colors, but I immediately saw poinsettias. I began dyeing fabric to get just the right colors for my vision of the work.
The poinsettias are turned edge applique applied to the pieced block with a machine blanket stitch. The blocks, when set together, form a secondary pattern of pinwheels. This quilt is probably not for beginners, but it is well worth the time and effort for the intermediate to advanced quilter.
