Master Class with Carol Soderlund

October 7, 2012

I am a lucky woman! I had the great good fortune to spend five days at Nancy Crow’s Timeber Barn studios in a master class with Carol Soderlund. We were only five students who were able to choose what techniques we wanted to learn. For me it was screen printing and discharge (removing color). Carol calls the class Visions/Revisions. It was wonderful.

The Barn is a dream space for wet work! The walk-out area in the back is complete with outlets so toxic work like bleaching or ironing Thiox can be done outside. Inside, the wet room is huge with multiple commercial sinks and many 4’x9′ tables. Only five students in this class, but we managed to use all of the space!

I didn’t take nearly enough photos as the class progressed. We were just too busy learning and practicing. But Carol demonstrated each technique for everyone and we joined in to try them out. One of those techniques was using soy wax as a resist. Here Carol is showing how to apply wax.

This is the same piece of fabric after Thiox was applied to discharge and background color was added.

In my next post, I’ll share photos of the fabrics created or begun by students.

Thank you for taking the time to take these photos and share with us. Many moons ago I took a class with Carol Sunderland at the Pro Chem and Dye factory, warehouse, and studio in Fall River MA. It was wonderful and helped me launch into fabric dying with confidence. I greatly enjoy Nancy Crow’s quilts so it must be quite fine learning from Carol in Nancy’s space.
I look forward to more photo postings!
